The bar at this groovy little ski-in-ski-out hideaway feels much as it would have four decades ago when movie movers and shakers including Steven Spielberg and David Lynch pow-wowed here over apéros.
This purpose-built resort above Morzine in the massive French/Swiss Portes du Soleil ski area was largely the brainchild of French racer Jean Vuarnet, better known for his sunglasses than for his gold medal at the Quaw Valley Olympics in 1960.
Recently, however, new and equally convenient villages of chalet-style apartments have grown up in purpose-built resorts such as Tignes, Flaine and Les Ménuires, and some of the old block - such as Labro's Dromonts hotel in Avoriaz and Breuer's Totem hotel in Flaine - have had makeovers.
50 ans après sa création, une oeuvre architecturale contemporaine aussi époustouflante que les cimes qu'elle côtoie. Figure emblématique d'Avoriaz, l'hôtel des Dromonts souffle cet hiver ses cinquante bougies.
